The Central Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Chairman Dr Joseph Kobina Essibu, are pushing for strategic collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Executives ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a meeting at the party’s regional office in Kumasi on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Central Regional Secretary Richard Takyi Mensah highlighted that the two regions together control 70 constituencies, one‑fourth of all constituencies nationwide. This partnership, he said, makes the alliance a significant force in the party’s preparations.
Mr Takyi Mensah noted that the Ashanti Region remains the NPP’s stronghold and that working together with the Central Region as one team would contribute immensely to the party’s success. He added that the executives were committed to ensuring that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wins the 2028 general elections.
“We are committed to presenting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as our candidate to lead us into the 2028 elections and ensure victory for the NPP,” Mr Takyi Mensah said.
Ashanti Regional Secretary Dr Francis Adomako described the engagement as unprecedented, saying it would allow the executives of both regions to share ideas, best practices and organisational strategies to rebuild the party’s grassroots base. He said the initiative was the first of its kind, with an entire regional executive body engaging another region in a structured collaboration.
“We are going to share ideas, share best practices and work together as one team to ensure that the NPP wins power in 2028. This is about unity and strategy,” Dr Adomako said. He expressed confidence that the joint effort would help position the NPP strongly and contribute significantly to its quest to return to power in 2028.
The engagement forms part of the party’s reorganisation efforts following its recent regional executive elections.
