Haruna Iddrisu Orders GES to Stop Students Performing Domestic Tasks for Teachers

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu told a press conference on Monday, October 26, 2026, that the Director‑General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) must ensure that students are not made to perform domestic duties for headmasters and teachers.

Iddrisu said the directive is a response to sexual misconduct allegations against the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, and female students. He stressed that students must be protected from practices that treat them as domestic servants and called for stronger safeguards within schools.

"The Director‑General of GES has been directed that no student should serve any headmaster or teacher as if they were the domestic servant of the headmaster and teachers forthwith," Iddrisu said.

Abdulai has been interdicted pending investigations, while the criminal aspects of the allegations have been referred to the Criminal Investigations Department. The Ministry of Education and GES will deploy administrative and legal measures to safeguard learners, Iddrisu assured the public.

Iddrisu added that political affiliations would not influence investigations into Abdulai, who is a member of the governing National Democratic Congress. He called on parents, guardians and students to support efforts to strengthen student protection in schools.

The allegations remain under investigation, with due process to be followed. The GES is expected to implement the new guidelines immediately to prevent any future incidents of students being used as domestic workers.
