Former Employment Minister Nii Armah Ashitey announced on Friday, September 25, that he will contest the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) chairmanship race, citing a need to make the party more inclusive, united and participatory.
Addressing the press, Ashitey said his leadership would prioritise strengthening the NDC’s structures, deepening internal democracy and giving greater attention to the grassroots, former executives, youth and women.
“Give me the opportunity to serve as national chairman. I will work towards a more inclusive, united, participatory NDC, where the grassroots, cadres, former executives, youth, women, and all committed members will have a meaningful place in the affairs of our party,” he said.
He pledged to rebuild bonds among party members and ensure that every member has a meaningful role in the affairs of the NDC, adding, “We must strengthen our structures, deepen internal democracy, rebuild the bonds of comradeship, and ensure that the NDC remains a party where every member matters and every contribution counts.”
Following the remarks, Ashitey formally declared his intention to contest the national chairmanship. “I hereby declare my intent to contest the national chairmanship of the great NDC party,” he said.
Ashitey joins a number of prominent NDC figures who have expressed interest in the position, including former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong‑Fosu and former DRIP Coordinator and former Odododiodioo MP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
The NDC’s internal elections are expected to take place in the coming months, with the party’s national executive committee set to decide the next chairperson. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Ashitey’s platform resonates with the party’s diverse membership.
