The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) today issued a warning to Ghanaian youth about the risks of publishing false information online, stating that offenders could face arrest under existing laws.
During the launch of the Empowering Ghanaian Youth Against Disinformation Project and the Let’sDebunk Civic Intelligence Platform, the Commission urged users to verify facts before sharing and to use social media responsibly.
Dr Imurana Mohammed, Director of Programmes at the NCCE, cautioned that “for young persons, as you sit and take your phones and tablets and think that you’re having fun, there are laws. And on a bad day, you could be picked,” he said.
He encouraged youths to employ digital platforms for learning and research rather than focusing predominantly on entertainment. “If you’re studying economics, how many will take out their phones and search for the latest modules? All we download is the latest videos and music,” he added.
Dr Imurana also expressed concern over the exposure of young people to hate speech online, warning that such content could negatively influence their views and perceptions.
The NCCE’s message comes amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation on social media, with the Commission emphasizing that spreading false information could violate Ghanaian laws.
While the Commission did not specify which statutes would apply, it made clear that the legal framework exists to prosecute those who disseminate unverified or harmful content.
As the initiative rolls out, the NCCE plans to collaborate with schools and community groups to promote digital literacy and responsible online behaviour among the country’s youth.
