Marietta Brew Appiah‑Oppong, legal adviser to President John Dramani Mahama, urged public institutions to deliver timely, accurate information and maintain proper records at the Right to Information Commission’s Stakeholders Conference in Accra. The event, themed “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder,” highlighted the duty of public officials to serve through transparent data sharing.
Ms. Brew stressed that access to information should be viewed as part of an official’s service mandate, requiring prompt responses, accurate records and clear explanations of decisions in plain language. She warned that access alone does not resolve every question of truth and that citizens must be empowered to assess information critically.
She also called on the media to verify claims and provide adequate context before publication, noting that many people assume media and social media content is automatically true. “Public officials must regard access to information as part of their duty to serve,” she said, adding that the media has a vital role in ensuring accurate reporting.
Ms. Brew’s remarks came amid growing concerns over information disorder in Ghana, with officials and journalists alike urged to uphold standards of accuracy and transparency to strengthen public trust.
