Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu said on Thursday that the international community is rallying behind President John Dramani Mahama’s call for reparatory justice for Africans affected by the transatlantic slave trade. The comments followed Mahama’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, 2026.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu highlighted that the growing interest from countries and major institutions in the reparatory justice agenda demonstrates a widening consensus on the issue. He noted that since Mahama’s March address and the subsequent adoption of the resolution he championed, several states and institutions have joined efforts to pursue reparatory justice for enslaved Africans.
The minister also pointed to the president’s remarks on the situation in Gaza, urging the international community to confront the suffering of Palestinians. “Sometimes, it is necessary to muster the courage and speak the truth, especially in areas where people are marginalised and are treated unfairly,” he said.
Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo added that Mahama’s address also underscored the need for peace and greater African representation in global decision‑making, echoing the legacy of Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah. She praised the president for highlighting Africa’s absence from a permanent UN Security Council seat.
Senior Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari noted that Mahama’s speeches have increasingly focused on humanity‑centred issues, from restoration and mineral sovereignty to human capital. “The future for Ghana, for Africa, for the world as a whole is bright,” she said, stressing that Mahama offers leadership beyond Ghana’s borders.
As the UN convenes, observers will watch how the growing international support translates into concrete actions for reparatory justice and broader African representation on the world stage.
