President John Dramani Mahama announced on Tuesday that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Department of Urban Roads have begun a review of the road network within the Airport enclave and the central business district. The move comes as new residential, commercial and hospitality projects are set to increase traffic pressure on existing roads.
Speaking at the sod‑cutting ceremony for the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project on September 15, Mahama said the review will look at widening roads and introducing one‑way systems to improve traffic flow. “Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow,” he said.
The Sentuo project is expected to include premium apartments, a 600‑room hotel, a 2,500‑capacity conference facility, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall and other commercial and leisure amenities. Mahama added that the government’s road interventions are intended to keep pace with the scale of private and public sector developments in the area.
“And so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one‑ways, and improve the road network,” Mahama added, underscoring the need for infrastructure upgrades to support the region’s rapid expansion.
Observers note that the review could set a precedent for future infrastructure projects around key economic hubs. The government will likely publish detailed plans in the coming months, with stakeholders urged to cooperate to ensure smooth implementation.
