Kumasi Assembly Cracks Down on Unapproved Transport Fares

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has intensified enforcement of approved transport fares, warning commercial drivers against arbitrary charges that force commuters to pay extra to reach their destinations. Mayor Richard Ofori‑Agyeman Boadi led officials from the Assembly’s Transport Department and a security task force to monitor operations at Abrepo Junction, Racecourse, Ashtown, Kejetia and Adum.

During the exercise, the team stopped loaded commercial vehicles and engaged passengers to determine whether drivers were charging approved fares. Some vehicles were cleared after the checks, while the Mayor personally supervised the loading of others to ensure passengers were transported to their intended destinations.

Mr Boadi cautioned drivers against operating short‑distance services, popularly known as “short‑short”, saying the practice forced passengers to pay additional fares to complete their journeys. He urged drivers to comply with approved transport arrangements and the operational rules of their respective unions.

The Mayor also directed the immediate closure of transport unions operating without the requisite permits, instructing them to obtain the necessary documentation before resuming operations. He urged the public to report drivers and transport unions that flouted approved fares, adding that the Assembly would continue monitoring transport operations across the metropolis to protect commuters from unfair practices.
