The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) confirmed that the Academic Board’s meeting on 9 September 2026 did not finalize any decisions regarding the appointment of Pro‑Vice‑Chancellors and Deans, following criticism from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG‑KNUST).
In a press release dated 10 September, KNUST Management stated that the Board received and considered the draft report of the Statutes Committee and added its inputs before submitting the report, draft statutes and recommendations to the University’s Governing Council for consideration and possible approval.
Management warned that the outcome of the Academic Board meeting should not be treated as a final position on the matters raised by UTAG. “The process is therefore ongoing, and it would be premature to attribute a final institutional position to the University or to suggest that any determination has been made on the matters raised by UTAG,” the statement read.
The university also reassured UTAG and the wider campus community that the review would remain inclusive, consultative and transparent, and that the views of relevant stakeholders would continue to be considered through the appropriate governance channels.
UTAG‑KNUST had earlier expressed disappointment with the Board’s decision, arguing that its participation in leadership appointments is grounded in Act 1157, Clause 5(f) and that the university’s strategic plan could not override its governing statute. The association said it would engage the University Council to seek reconsideration and advocate for a framework that respects statutory provisions.
As the review proceeds, stakeholders will await the Governing Council’s response to the draft statutes and the Academic Board’s recommendations.
