Two men lost their lives after becoming trapped in a mining pit in Juaboso, a town in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region, on Saturday, September 26, 2026. According to 3News, the men entered the pit around noon to mine, but soon found themselves weakened by the intense heat and lack of proper ventilation inside the shaft.
When the men failed to return by the morning of Sunday, September 27, a friend of theirs went down the pit to investigate. The friend discovered the two men in a weakened state and immediately raised the alarm, prompting residents and other community members to launch a rescue operation.
The victims were extracted from the pit and rushed to the Juaboso Government Hospital, where medical staff pronounced them dead. One of the deceased has been identified as Richard Oduro, popularly known as “Churches,” a resident of Juaboso Township. The identity of the second victim, who is believed to be from outside the community, has not yet been established.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement detailing the exact circumstances or cause of the deaths. The incident has raised concerns about safety standards at local mining operations and the need for better ventilation and emergency protocols.
