The Ghana National Fire Service, in partnership with Ghana Water Limited, conducted a sweep of fire hydrants across the Ministries enclave in Accra. The Greater Accra Regional Fire Command reported that out of roughly 30 hydrants inspected, only five were fully operational with high water pressure, while two registered low pressure.
Twenty‑three hydrants were deemed non‑functional, a finding that has prompted worries about the adequacy of water supplies for firefighting in the event of an emergency.
During the exercise, it was also noted that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department had no fire hydrant on its premises. Regional Fire Officer ACFO II Rashid Nisawu urged the department’s management to work with the GNFS and GWL to install a hydrant.
The inspection covered several key government institutions, including the State Interests and Governance Authority, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, the Ministries of Transport, Roads and Highways, Energy and Finance, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Health Service, National Lottery Authority, the Court Complex and the Accra Sports Stadium.
The initiative is part of a proactive effort by the GNFS and GWL to identify, repair and restore non‑functional hydrants before the peak fire season, aiming to improve water access during firefighting operations, strengthen emergency response and protect lives and property.
