Ghana has launched a major evacuation effort to bring home approximately 1,000 citizens from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic violence against migrants.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration confirmed on Saturday that the airlifts will run in batches, with the initial group of returnees expected to land at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27.
The voluntary repatriation program focuses first on those who registered for assistance with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
"Priority will be given to women, children, the elderly, persons with medical conditions, and students," the Ministry stated, adding that emergency consular responses have been reactivated to ensure safe passage.
Local Ghanaian organizations and religious groups in South Africa have stepped in to support those forced from their homes. The Ministry highlighted the leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, alongside Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for providing free temporary shelter to displaced citizens waiting to board flights.
Distressed Ghanaians remaining in South Africa who require travel assistance or emergency consular support have been advised to reach the High Commission's dedicated helpline at 0723681010.
Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to monitoring the situation closely and assisting any Ghanaian seeking to leave the country until safety is restored.
