As World Cleanup Day approaches on September 20, the GF Foundation (GFF), a Ghanaian social enterprise, has started a sanitation education programme in several Greater Accra communities. The initiative aims to promote safe waste disposal, personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness to curb disease spread.
GFF will instruct residents on proper handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, bathing, and respiratory etiquette such as covering coughs. The training also covers correct use of toilets and latrines, and the safe management of solid waste and wastewater.
Haggar Quao, Head of Community Environmental Research at GFF, said the organisation will “spread the gospel of environmental sanitation and be deliberate in its actions in protecting the environment.” She added, “Cleaning our gutters shouldn’t begin and end with World Cleanup Day. It must be part of our culture.”
Quao urged all Ghanaians to join the massive cleanup exercise tomorrow, during which GFF volunteers will desilt gutters in Nungua and surrounding areas. The activity will start at 7 am from Nungua Market to the Nungua Police Station, with volunteers and sympathisers joining hands to clean gutters, clear debris and keep the environment tidy. The effort will extend to nearby communities.
World Cleanup Day, held annually on September 20, unites millions of volunteers across more than 190 countries to tackle the global solid waste crisis.
