Ismail Kartal announced his resignation as Fenerbahce head coach just minutes after the club’s 1‑1 draw with AS Roma in the Champions League, ending a brief fourth spell that began in June 2026. Kartal, 65, said he would never return to the club, where he had previously played and served as assistant coach.
Fenerbahce entered the match in ninth place in the Turkish Super Lig, having won two and lost two league games. It was also the club’s first Champions League outing in 18 years. Kartal’s decision came after only one European match and a brief period of domestic competition.
In his post‑match press conference, Kartal thanked the players and the president for their support, noting the training sessions and camps had been “wonderful days.” He added that the pressure of the role and a mid‑match incident—when a bottle was thrown from the stands and struck him—had influenced his decision. “I made this decision to pave the way for my club,” he said. “From now on, to help Fenerbahce, my players and future coaches, I have resigned with the intention of never returning.”
Club president Aziz Yildirim rejected Kartal’s resignation, declaring on the club’s website that Kartal remains in charge and that the club would continue to support him. Yildirim also identified the spectator involved in the bottle incident and said the individual has been banned from the stadium. He criticised supporters and media for the “pressure” created by constant criticism, urging the community to uphold the values of the Fenerbahce family.
Players were stunned by the announcement. English defender Archie Brown, who scored the equaliser for Fenerbahce, admitted he was unaware of the resignation during a post‑match interview. “What do you mean he resigned? As coach? He’s not the coach anymore? He said this just now?” Brown said.
Kartal’s tenure at Fenerbahce has seen him win the Turkish Super Cup in 2014 during his first spell as manager. As a player he secured two league titles among six trophies with the club. The club will now appoint a new head coach and seek to rebuild after the abrupt departure of a long‑time figure.
