Céline Dion opened her 26‑show residency at Paris La Défense Arena on Saturday, marking the first full‑length concert she has performed since 2020. The Canadian superstar, who was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in 2022, had not taken the stage for a full show after a single song at the 2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony.
Addressing the packed arena, Dion said, "I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. And here I am. Singing for you, and singing for me," before breaking into tears after her opening number. She later changed from a black gown to a trouser suit, dancing and engaging the audience in both French and English.
Critics described the evening as a tense, tearful, joyous affair. The Telegraph’s Neil McCormick noted the singer’s voice sounded fragile at first but grew stronger as the night progressed, while The Times’ Will Hodgkinson praised the stage direction and the emotional impact of the performance.
Dion’s return was celebrated by fans outside her hotel, LeRoyal Monceau, and by a city‑wide karaoke event organised by Paris City Hall. The first leg of the residency sold out within minutes, prompting her management to add ten more shows for May 2027.
She said she will not let her diagnosis control her life, stating she will train like an athlete or switch off. The Paris shows will run through September, October, and into the New Year, with tribute boat cruises and sing‑along events keeping the momentum alive.
