The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced that its 2025 Ashanti GJA Awards will be open to all media professionals in the region, regardless of their membership status. The decision was unveiled in Kumasi at the launch of the awards’ first flagship programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ashanti Regional GJA Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh voiced concern that some journalists were unable to register as members because of ongoing reform processes at the national level. He said the new open policy would ensure that all deserving work can be recognised.
Applications for the 2025 awards will open on 9 September 2026. Interested entrants must submit their entries via [email protected] for works published or broadcast between 1 January and 31 December 2025.
The awards will celebrate excellence across a wide range of categories, including Sports, Education, Investigative Journalism, Photography, Arts and Entertainment, Business and Economy, Environment, Science and Climate, Health, Crime and Court, Agriculture, and Community Impact Journalism. Additional categories such as Best Feature, Best Columnist and Best Documentary will also be contested, along with special awards to honour veteran journalists who are currently retired.
With the broadened eligibility, the GJA hopes to spotlight more diverse voices and stories from the Ashanti region. Entries are expected to flood in as the deadline approaches, and the association will announce the winners later in 2026.
