Alfred Kwadwo Thompson was elected National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the party’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, 3 October 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Thompson secured 2,243 votes, outpacing his rivals in a vote that completed the selection of the party’s new national executive team ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Thompson brings a wealth of banking and finance experience to the role. He began his career at the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) in the Foreign Operations Department, rising to Head of the Trade Finance Unit and later managing Business Development and Marketing Communications in the Corporate and Customer Relations Department. He then moved to Standard Trust Bank, now United Bank for Africa (UBA), as Deputy Head of Foreign Operations, and served as Deputy Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB).

He holds a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside and an undergraduate degree from the University of Hull’s School of Business Studies. Thompson has also been active on the NPP’s Communications Team, frequently commenting on governance and economic issues and advocating fiscal discipline and greater accountability in public spending.

In March 2026, he warned that unchecked borrowing and non‑transparent spending could threaten Ghana’s economic stability, urging the government to prioritise value‑for‑money projects. He has also raised concerns about public procurement, questioning a sole‑sourced contract awarded by GoldBod for laptops and office renovation, and has described illegal mining as a national security issue, warning about the violence associated with the activity.

Beyond banking and partisan politics, Thompson served as National President of the Ghana United Nations Students and Youth Association (GUNSA), National Coordinator for Life‑Link Ghana and the International Students Movement for the United Nations (ISMUN), and was Chapter President of Rotary International’s Accra Labone Chapter.

Hailing from Twidan Ebusua in Cape Coast, Thompson attended St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast and Okuapemman School in Akropong‑Akuapem. As National Treasurer, he will oversee the NPP’s financial affairs, with his banking background and advocacy for financial accountability expected to shape the party’s fiscal strategy as it prepares for the 2028 elections.

Observers note that Thompson’s appointment signals the NPP’s intent to strengthen its financial governance ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle, with his experience poised to bring discipline and transparency to the party’s budgeting and expenditure processes.
