Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has launched a scathing attack on the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, dismissing it as a collection of rhetoric that offers no real solutions to the country's pressing economic troubles.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament shortly after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson delivered the presentation on Thursday, the Effutu Member of Parliament argued that the government's update was long on promises but severely lacking in practical policy interventions.
"You see, you are suffering and you've been redundant in your various ministries," Afenyo-Markin told the House, addressing the government bench. "His Deputy Minister told the nation that GH¢1.6 billion was released to the Roads Minister. Today, he says only GH¢1.1 billion."
Discrepancies and Policy Outcomes
Highlighting what he characterized as troubling inconsistencies in the administration's financial reporting, the Minority Leader questioned the credibility of the expenditure figures presented to Parliament.
Beyond the conflicting figures, Afenyo-Markin challenged the government's approach to economic management, insisting that heavy spending should not be mistaken for actual progress.
"The true measure of a Finance Minister is not how much he spends," Afenyo-Markin stated, emphasizing that the ministry should instead be judged by tangible policy outcomes that improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
The Minority's sharp response sets the stage for what promises to be a contentious debate in Parliament over the coming days, as lawmakers scrutinize the government's financial strategy for the remainder of the fiscal year.
