Ongoing renovation work at Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport is officially scheduled for completion by December 2026, according to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The $15 million modernization project aims to reconfigure and upgrade the facility so it can accommodate both domestic and international flights simultaneously, helping to relieve severe passenger congestion currently experienced at Terminal 3.
Progress Update to Parliament
GACL Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare disclosed the completion timeline while briefing members of Parliament’s Roads and Transportation Committee during an oversight inspection tour of the airport on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Mrs. Opare assured lawmakers that construction is progressing steadily without disrupting existing flight operations, noting that contractors have partitioned key areas to maintain active domestic services while final infrastructure works continue on the international wing.
"Hopefully by December, we will finish all the works with Terminal 2 and His Excellency will have the opportunity to come and commission it," Mrs. Opare told the parliamentary delegation.
Infrastructure and Facility Upgrades
The structural overhaul forms part of GACL's broader operational strategy to modernize airport infrastructure and enhance passenger throughput across Ghana's main international gateway.
Key upgrades being executed under the $15 million package include:
Expanded Processing Capacity: Additional check-in counters to reduce queue times during peak travel hours.
Baggage Handling: Modernized baggage handling systems engineered for faster turnaround times.
Screening Systems: Enhanced security checkpoints integrated with advanced screening technology.
Commercial Spaces: Fully refurbished retail and duty-free areas for commercial vendors.
Tackling Traffic Growth
Terminal 2, which has traditionally served domestic routes and select regional flights, has seen a steady rise in traveler traffic over recent years. Once completed, the upgraded dual-purpose terminal is expected to significantly improve service quality, optimize flight handling, and support Ghana's position as a regional aviation and tourism hub in West Africa.
