Absa Bank Ghana LTD announced its support for the 2026 GirlCode Ghana Hackathon, a two‑day event held in Accra that aimed to equip young women with practical digital skills and pathways into technology and innovation.
The hackathon, part of the larger GirlCode Pan‑African initiative, drew participants from diverse backgrounds to form teams, identify real‑world challenges and develop tech solutions under the guidance of industry mentors.
Justice Amegashie, Chief Information and Enablement Officer at Absa Bank Ghana, urged participants to create solutions that address community and continental challenges, noting that artificial intelligence is lowering barriers for innovation.
“Artificial intelligence is lowering barriers that once limited who could build, innovate and solve complex problems,” he said. “Africa’s digital transformation will be stronger when the people building it reflect the diversity, talent and perspectives of our continent.”
Anita Twum‑Ampofo, Head of Technology and Service Management at Absa, emphasized the need to build an ecosystem that lets women’s potential flourish. “When women are empowered with knowledge, technology, mentorship and opportunity, extraordinary things happen,” she added.
Beyond coding, participants gained experience in teamwork, problem‑solving, pitching and entrepreneurial thinking, skills increasingly vital in today’s workplace.
Absa’s backing of the hackathon underscores its commitment to empowering the next generation of innovators and expanding access for young people, especially women, in the digital economy.
