UPSA Students Demand Affordable Housing After Rising Hostel Fees

Students living near the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) have raised alarms over the escalating cost of private hostel accommodation, with some paying more than GH¢6,000 for a four‑person room. The high fees have prompted calls for government action to make housing more affordable for students pursuing their studies.

During a visit to the area on Tuesday, October 13, students highlighted frequent increases in hostel charges by private owners and managers, despite the inadequate facilities offered. Many hostels feature small rooms where occupants share washrooms and kitchen areas, leading students to question the justification for the steep rates.

The rising cost of accommodation has become a major concern for many students, who struggle to balance hostel fees with other academic and living expenses. At a meeting on Monday, October 12, Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu expressed concern over the issue and announced that a committee would be formed to examine the situation and explore possible measures to address the high fees in the private hostel sector.

Students are appealing to the government to take urgent steps to make accommodation more affordable while ensuring that private hostel operators provide decent facilities that meet the needs of students. They believe that effective measures would ease financial pressure on students and their families and improve access to suitable accommodation.
