From 1 November 2026, the Ghana Police Service will roll out TraffiTech‑GH, a digital traffic enforcement system that uses fixed cameras, mobile devices and laser speed‑measurement equipment to capture selected road offences. The system will gather evidence automatically, send it to a central back office, and, after validation, issue an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) to the vehicle owner or driver via SMS.
ACP Alexander Obeng, Director of Research, Education and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said the system is intended to complement, not replace, the existing manual enforcement. “It’s coming to complement our manual way of delivering our services, including evidence gathering on behaviour,” he told Channel One TV on 28 September.
TraffiTech‑GH will target violations such as speeding, running red lights, expired road‑worthiness certificates, wrongful overtaking, seat‑belt non‑use, driving with an expired licence, uninsured vehicles and misuse of sirens. Once an offence is confirmed, the ENV will detail the ticket number, location, date and time, vehicle registration, offence description, fine amount and payment deadline.
Motorists who receive an ENV can pay the fine electronically through Ghana.gov.gh using mobile money services (MTN, Telecel, AirtelTigo) or a debit/credit card, or by dialing *222# and selecting option six. A notice does not obligate the recipient to appear in court unless they wish to contest it. Those who dispute a fine have 14 days to initiate an online contest, choose a regional MTTD station and a hearing date; the MTTD will confirm the appointment by SMS.
If an ENV is received for a vehicle not owned by the recipient, the owner must contact the TraffiTech‑GH Call Centre immediately. Selling a vehicle does not automatically relieve the previous owner’s liability unless ownership records are updated with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority.
TraffiTech‑GH aims to strengthen evidence gathering, improve compliance with road traffic laws and ultimately reduce crashes, deaths and injuries on Ghanaian roads.
