A disagreement broke out among aspirants over how ballots should be counted after voting closed in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Greater Accra Regional Executive elections.
Voting officially ended at 3:15pm at the WAEC Hall in Tema Community 5, where delegates from across the region had gathered to elect new regional executives.
Shortly after voting closed, some aspirants raised concerns about the counting procedure, leading to differing views among contestants, election officials and other stakeholders at the venue. While some aspirants were content for counting to proceed under the arrangements set out by election officials, others expressed reservations and called for clarification before the ballots were opened.
The disagreement created tension at the venue as election officials, party officers, members of the Election Committee and contestants held discussions to resolve the concerns and agree on the way forward.
After about an hour of back and forth, party officers, the Election Committee, Electoral Commission officials and the police provided direction for the counting process to proceed, and the ballots were subsequently cleared for counting as the parties involved worked through the remaining concerns.
