The Tema Metropolitan Assembly has started building a new fish‑processing plant at the Tema Newtown site, featuring 150 kilns and 30 fish‑drying slabs. The project also incorporates washroom facilities to boost hygiene and sanitation across the area.
Earlier this year, the assembly demolished existing structures at the site after concerns surfaced over unsanitary practices, such as fish being dried beside refuse dumps and the prevalence of open defecation. The demolition was said to clear the way for a shoreline clean‑up exercise and to create a cleaner environment for fish‑processing activities.
Abdul Latif Amin, the Tema East Sub‑Metro Director, told reporters that the new facility should be ready for use by November 2026. Grace Nkum, a fish processor who commutes from Ashaiman to the site, welcomed the development, saying it would improve working conditions for fish processors.
With the new plant, Tema aims to enhance the local fish industry’s efficiency and compliance with health standards, potentially boosting the town’s economic profile and employment opportunities.
