State Housing Company Says Road Upgrades Will Make Amrahia Housing More Accessible

State Housing Company Limited (SHC) said that the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme is improving road connectivity to emerging communities outside Accra, making its housing developments more accessible to workers. The company is developing a 195‑unit Surge Homes project in Amrahia, about 15 minutes from the Adenta Barrier, and the new roads are expected to cut commute times to East Legon and Accra Central to under half an hour once the contractor finishes the work.

Speaking at an open house ceremony for Surge Homes, SHC Managing Director John Sheriff Bawah stressed that housing delivery must be matched with transport infrastructure to make new residential areas viable for workers. “There are two sides to the story. There’s the side where we provide the housing unit and then thankfully, under the leadership of His Excellency, we have what we call the Big Push,” Bawah said. “If you combine the housing delivery with the aggressive approach that His Excellency’s government is pushing to develop our road infrastructure, not only in Accra but across the country, I believe that in the next year when the contractor is done on this road, anybody leaving from Amrahia here, from Surge Homes to work, whether it’s East Legon, whether it’s Accra Central, you shouldn’t spend more than half an hour on the road.”

Bawah added that improved connectivity would allow more Ghanaians to consider housing options in emerging communities outside the city centre. “The government is actively providing roads so you can get to work on time, come back home on time, so you can have time for your families,” he said. SHC is expanding its portfolio across the country, with projects in Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast and Takoradi.

SHC’s Surge Homes development comprises 2‑, 3‑ and 4‑bedroom detached houses, and the company says the new road infrastructure will make the area a more attractive option for families looking to move away from Accra’s traditional urban centres.

What to watch next: SHC will continue to roll out housing projects across Ghana as the Big Push road upgrades progress, potentially reshaping settlement patterns outside major cities.
