Broadcast journalist and community advocate Samuel Kojo Brace, known as Ahanta Pele, has announced his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary for the Ahanta West Constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Brace revealed his decision at a press conference, concluding a period of speculation about his political future. He is expected to file his nomination once the NPP opens the primary process.
The move follows a series of community engagements in Ahanta West, including the “Walk with Ahanta Pele” health and fitness event held in Agona Nkwanta in September. The event drew residents from across the region and members of the NPP Ahanta West Constituency executive.
Explaining his decision, Brace said his political ambition had been shaped by more than a decade of community service. He noted encouragement from individuals across the political spectrum—including members of the NDC, CPP and unaffiliated residents—to consider entering politics, citing a shared message that his commitment to the development of Ahanta West should transcend party lines.
Brace linked his motivation to his experience as a student leader at the University of Cape Coast, where he served two terms as president of the Ahanta Students Association. He recalled establishing a fund to help students unable to pay school fees, an experience that highlighted poverty challenges and reinforced his conviction that poverty reduction should remain central to his public service agenda.
He expressed pride in belonging to the NPP and praised the party’s contributions to Ghana’s development, citing policies such as free maternal healthcare and the Free Senior High School programme. Brace also voiced support for the party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, highlighting initiatives like the Gold-for-Oil programme and domestic gold purchase programme.
Brace outlined priorities for his campaign, including entrepreneurship, job creation and improved representation, drawing on his journalism and community advocacy experience. His declaration now places him among the contenders for the NPP’s parliamentary nomination in Ahanta West, with the eventual primary winner set to represent the party in the 2028 general election.
