On Saturday, October 10, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, the New Patriotic Party’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, urged those involved in the arrest and detention of Techiman‑based nurse Salomey Awiti Baffoe to issue an apology, arguing that the nurse’s treatment raised serious concerns about individual liberties.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Okoe Boye criticised what he described as an exercise of power rather than a genuine security concern. He said the nurse had been “taken through this ordeal” and that officials had “only been trying to show her where power lies.” He added that Baffoe had been granted bail of GH¢100,000 by the Adenta Circuit Court on October 5, after the prosecution did not oppose her application, and that she is now required to report to police every two weeks while the case is adjourned to February 17, 2027.

Okoe Boye highlighted that the High Court had earlier refused bail, citing the risk that releasing her could interfere with ongoing investigations involving cyber‑related evidence. He questioned how a person “who is a threat to the state” could be allowed to walk around Ghana until the next year’s hearing.

“There is one thing we must fight for, whether we are in opposition or in government and it is the liberty of individuals,” Okoe Boye said. He called for those involved to come and apologise to the nurse, adding that the case was “a funny case” and that the authorities had been “trying to show her where power lies.”

Baffoe is accused of abetting the publication of false news connected to the TikTok account known as Ghana Jollof. The case has been postponed until 2027, leaving her in a state of limbo while authorities continue to monitor her movements.

Okoe Boye’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over how the state handles alleged cyber‑crime cases and the balance between security and personal freedoms. The nurse’s legal team has not yet issued a response to the chairman’s call for an apology.

Observers will watch how the Ministry of Justice and the police respond to the NPP’s demand, and whether the High Court will reconsider its bail decision in light of the political pressure.
