Senior football figures have urged the Premier League to deliver a decision on Manchester City’s financial misconduct before the season’s close, according to BBC Sport.

The league announced on Tuesday that City had been found guilty of all charges relating to breaches of its financial regulations between the 2009‑10 and 2017‑18 seasons, including inflating revenue by more than £900m through sham sponsorship deals.

City has denied the allegations and signalled an appeal by the end of the week, but the process has already stretched over three years since the club was first charged.

Anonymous club officials told BBC Sport that a resolution by season‑end would benefit everyone involved. One said, “It benefits everyone for this to be resolved as quickly as possible.” Another added, “Instinctively yes, but it has to be done right. We can all see what the risks are if it’s not.”

The Premier League’s regulations allow an appeal to conclude no more than 12 weeks after filing, with a decision within 30 days of that. Procedures can be expedited to meet seasonal deadlines.

Ferran Soriano, City’s chief executive, has suggested the case will run for a long time, and the club cannot appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but could challenge the High Court’s impartiality.

Etihad Airways, City’s main sponsor since 2009, has rejected any implication of improper arrangements and warned it may pursue legal action against the league. The airline said it was “deeply concerned” by the public communication of the findings and will seek legal counsel.

The Premier League declined to comment when contacted by BBC Sport.

Football insiders say a quick verdict would prevent uncertainty and potential farce if City were to win the title without punishment.
