Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 presidential candidate and former Vice President, met with the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) at GMA House, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, on Wednesday. The meeting was part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders across the country.
Led by GMA President Professor (Dr.) Ernest Yorke, the discussion focused on a range of challenges facing doctors and the wider health system, including workforce retention, remuneration, equitable distribution of medical doctors, infrastructure, emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived‑area allowances and the role of the private sector in delivery.
The group also examined the Medical and Dental Council’s licensing examinations, a topic that has sparked debate among medical professionals. Bawumia said the engagement offered important insights and reinforced his view that significant changes are needed in health policy formulation and implementation.
“Following our discussions, I am convinced that a paradigm shift is needed in our health care policies,” Bawumia said. He added that several ideas presented could bring substantial improvements to doctors’ welfare and the health sector if put into practice.
Highlighting the need for collaboration, Bawumia thanked the GMA leadership for their candour and commitment to the wellbeing of Ghanaians. He urged stakeholders to work together to strengthen emergency preparedness, infrastructure and the private sector’s contribution to a robust, resilient and patient‑centred system.
The meeting comes amid growing concerns over the retention and distribution of medical professionals across Ghana. Bawumia expressed hope that the proposals would help build a health system that serves all communities, especially those struggling to attract and keep doctors.
As part of a broader stakeholder consultation tour, Bawumia will continue engaging professional and interest groups on national development issues.
