NPP Chairman Butey Urges Party Unity After Internal Contest

Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Joseph Danquah Smith Butey, addressed the NPP’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday, October 3, 2026, urging members to reject bitterness and division after the party’s internal contest.

Speaking to delegates, Mr Butey highlighted the party’s history of overcoming challenges and urged supporters to focus on rebuilding and renewing the NPP rather than allowing the election outcome to become a source of discord.

"This is not the time for bitterness, this is not the time for division, it is not the time to tear one another apart. This is the time to rebuild, this is the time to reunite, this is the time to renew our faith in NPP," he said.

He reminded members that despite supporting different candidates and holding varying views, they remain part of the same party. "The election before us must therefore be conducted with dignity, discipline and respect. Let the pilots speak, let the will of the delegates prevail. Whoever emerges, let us stand together behind the institution of the NPP," he added.

Emphasising the importance of grassroots, Mr Butey declared, "The grassroots are not tools of politicians. The grassroots are the party. And if the grassroots are strong, the NPP is strong. If the grassroots are respected, the NPP is respected. If the grassroots are united, the NPP is united."

He acknowledged that political differences had sometimes turned into bitterness and called for reconciliation. "How long are we going to fight ourselves? How long will brother fight brother? How long will sister fight sister? How long will a patriot wake up thinking about how to destroy another patriot? Enough is enough," he said.

Mr Butey urged members to accept the outcome of the internal elections and support whoever emerges, stressing that disagreement should not breed enmity. "We can disagree without becoming enemies. We can compete without becoming bitter. We can lose without becoming traitors. We can win without becoming arrogant. Because when the election is over, we will still be one party," he said.

He further called on the party to reconnect with its grassroots, rebuild its structures and restore confidence among its members, reminding supporters that the NPP was built through sacrifices and should not be undermined by personal ambitions or temporary disagreements.
