Sam Pyne, the aspirant for the National Patriotic Party’s (NPP) first vice chairmanship, accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of exacerbating issues that had long plagued the NPP. Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, September 11, 2026, Pyne said the cronyism, alleged corruption, rising prices and other governance challenges that critics once pointed at the NPP are now more pronounced under the current administration.
"What Ghanaians said that the NPP did, which was wrong, we’re having it worse now," Pyne remarked. He cited the appointment of family and friends as a major point of contention against President Akufo‑Addo’s cabinet, a criticism that had dominated the media for weeks. "I remember you had a panel here, and for weeks the running story was about President Akufo‑Addo having a cabinet of his own people. What do we see now?" he asked.
Pyne also compared past accusations of corruption against the NPP with the present situation, insisting that the NDC had no basis to claim that the NPP’s record should deter Ghanaians from voting for the party again. He highlighted the economic pressures facing citizens, noting that goods and services are now skyrocketing, yet the government allegedly uses propaganda to suppress the reality.
He urged the NDC to be held accountable for its performance rather than relying on past criticisms of the NPP. Pyne pointed to the economic difficulties experienced during the latter part of the NPP’s tenure, citing global shocks between 2019 and 2022. He said the party had acknowledged its shortcomings and asked for forgiveness, stating, "After all, forgiveness is divine. We’ve told the world that yes, there are certain things we did not do right, and therefore we plead for forgiveness."
Looking ahead, Pyne said the NPP’s task is to rebuild the party, regain voter confidence and position itself to win the 2028 general election.
