NPP’s New Leadership Urged to Rebuild Unity and Grassroots Ties

After the National Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference this weekend, which installed a new national executive team, political scientist Dr Kwasi Amakye‑Boateng cautioned that the party is “breaking apart” and must urgently rebuild unity if it hopes to compete in the 2028 elections.

Amakye‑Boateng said the conference’s outcomes should be evaluated against the internal challenges the NPP has faced since its 2024 electoral defeat. He urged the new leadership to bring back members who have left the party and to address divisions within its ranks.

“The party is breaking apart,” the scholar remarked. “The new leadership must find ways to bring back members who have left the party and address divisions within its ranks.” He added that the structure created at the conference must be used to achieve and sustain unity, stressing that leaders should demonstrate how it will create opportunities for cohesion.

Reconnecting with grassroots supporters was highlighted as a critical step. Amakye‑Boateng pointed to the party’s poor performance in the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold, noting that the NPP had “lost touch with the rank and file,” which he said contributed to the disappointing results there.

The scholar advised the new executives to learn from recent experiences and to change how they engage members and the wider electorate. While he acknowledged that the new leaders should be given the benefit of the doubt, he stressed that rebuilding the party requires more than simply electing new leaders.

As the NPP seeks to recover from its 2024 loss, the call for unity and grassroots engagement underscores the challenges the party faces ahead of the next general election.
