Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, coordinator of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, was sworn in as Head of Government by King Mohammed VI on Tuesday. The appointment marks the first time a woman has been given this top executive role in Morocco.
After the Royal Audience, El Mansouri addressed the press, saying she was honoured by the appointment and that she had received the King’s guidelines for managing the next phase of governance. She described the move as a historic moment for Morocco, adding:
"This is a historic moment for our country. This is the first time that a woman has been appointed to head a government, which is a source of pride for me and for all the women of the country."
El Mansouri stressed that her appointment carries a broader message for Moroccan women, noting the King’s continued support for women’s participation in national development. She said her role should encourage women to contribute to building a harmonious society alongside other sections of the country.
She announced that consultations would begin immediately within her party and with other political parties as she works toward forming a new government. "I will work towards proposing a government that lives up to the expectations of His Majesty the King and all citizens," she said.
El Mansouri highlighted the need for a government capable of responding to the country’s challenges and meeting citizens’ expectations, particularly those of young people. She said she would focus on developing a programme built around practical measures:
"We will draw up a programme offering realistic and concrete solutions."
Her appointment sets the stage for consultations on the composition and programme of the new government, as Morocco looks to align its leadership with the King’s vision and the aspirations of its population.
