President John Dramani Mahama announced that the government will import rechargeable electric wheelchairs for persons with disabilities (PWDs) during a citizens’ engagement in Goaso at the end of his two‑day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region. The pilot project aims to improve mobility for PWDs and the wheelchairs will be handed over to the National Council on Persons with Disability upon arrival.

Mahama said the initiative would be replicated each year if the pilot proves successful. He also highlighted that the allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) for persons with disabilities has been increased from three per cent to five per cent under his administration.

In addition, the President announced that the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) would be amended to further protect and promote the rights of PWDs. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to health, noting the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme and the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as MahamaCares, to ease the financial burden of chronic diseases.
