Ghanaian artiste Lasmid has urged a national dialogue on the importance of DJs in the music industry, saying their contribution is often taken for granted.
In a recent X post, Lasmid reflected on his own upbringing, noting how DJs helped artists feel bigger, spread songs further, and provide the soundtrack to people’s lives. "Ghanaian DJs deserve their flowers," he wrote, adding that many of his successes were shaped by those moments.
He called for a celebration of Ghanaian DJs, stating, "I just think it’s time we had a real conversation about how much DJs mean to Ghanaian music and how much more they deserve."
The call comes amid debates that new media platforms and influencers may now hold more sway in promoting Ghanaian music, potentially eclipsing traditional DJ influence.
For the past decade, the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, organised by Merqury Republic, have recognised DJs across various industry sectors, yet Lasmid believes further elevation is needed.
