GIS Celebrates 10th TIME Educators’ Conference, Highlights Teaching Gains

The Ghana International School (GIS) marked the 10th anniversary of its TIME Educators’ Conference on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at its Secondary School campus in Cantonments, Accra. The event, themed “10 Years of Impact: Transforming Education, One Teacher at a TIME,” aimed to strengthen teaching practices and improve learning outcomes across the country.

Professor Jonathan Fletcher, founding dean of the University of Ghana’s School of Education and Leadership, delivered the keynote address. He noted that when the National Teachers’ Standards were introduced in 2017, fewer than 10% of teachers could meet them, whereas today at least 68% can. Fletcher credited the TIME conference with spreading improved teaching practices nationwide, describing the initiative as a “great thing” that propagates effective methods beyond GIS.

Professor Fletcher also discussed the growing use of artificial intelligence in classrooms, calling it a valuable tool but urging ethical use and academic integrity. He stressed that learners must understand AI‑generated work rather than present it as their own.

Principal and Head of School Nadia O. Bruce‑Müller explained that the conference began in 2016 as an in‑house professional development program for teachers who could not travel abroad. What started with about 30 presenters has grown to more than 1,000 participants and nearly 100 presenters, including educators from across Ghana and abroad, and this year featured two senior student presenters.

Bruce‑Müller highlighted the need for continuous professional development as learners and the educational landscape evolve. She said the theme reflects the belief that every teacher can take at least one practical lesson from the conference back to the classroom and use it to improve learning.

GIS continues to offer 100 to 200 free or sponsored registrations each year for teachers from public and private schools. The 10th edition reaffirmed the conference’s focus on lifelong learning, collaboration and the adoption of effective teaching methods to meet changing demands.
