The Naval Recruit Training School (NRTS) of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) concluded a 26‑week course by passing out 346 recruits of Basic Training Intake 85 (BT 85). The ceremony took place on Friday, September 25, at the NAVTRAC Parade Square in Nutekpor, Volta Region.
Recruits underwent classroom instruction, practical exercises and military drills designed to prepare them for service in the Ghana Navy. Volta Regional Minister James Gunu addressed the crowd, congratulating the new sailors and reminding them that joining the Ghana Armed Forces is more than a uniform change – it is a pledge of responsibility and trust to the Ghanaian people.
Minister Gunu urged the graduates to wear their uniform with integrity, professionalism and patriotism, and to perform their duties with firmness, fairness, discipline and respect for human rights. He warned against extortion, brutality and other unprofessional conduct, calling them ambassadors of law and order while confronting emerging security threats such as armed robbery, cybercrime, drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Commodore Godson Kwabla Zowonoo (Rtd), the Reviewing Officer, also congratulated the recruits. He stressed that the passing‑out ceremony marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning and professional growth, encouraging them to pursue continuous self‑improvement, exercise sound judgement and remain committed to excellence.
Several recruits were honoured for outstanding performance. Petty Officer Class 1 Asafo‑Agyei Audrey Kantanka received the Overall Best Recruit award, Chief Petty Officer Class 1 Alimenu Hamza earned Best in Drill, Ordinary Seaman Under Naval Training (OSUT) Amadi Blankson De‑young Jnr was adjudged Best in Academics, and OSUT Sadiq Huseifa received the Commanding Officer’s Special Award.
The ceremony was attended by South Tongu District Chief Executive Victoria Dzeklu, former Chief of the Naval Staff Rear Admiral Geoffrey Mawuli Biekro (Rtd), senior officers, instructors, senior rates, and families and friends of the graduates. The Ghana Navy Regimental Band provided ceremonial support.
Looking ahead, the Ghana Navy will continue to train and deploy its new recruits to safeguard national security and uphold the reputation of the Armed Forces.
