The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat confirmed a payment of about US$3.5 million to the University of Memphis, settling a large chunk of the tuition debt that had prompted the school to suspend its scholarship partnership with the Ghanaian government.
Students received an email on Tuesday, September 8, stating that the payment had been made and that progress was being made to resolve the dispute. The university had earlier warned that it had over US$4 million in unpaid fees from Ghanaian students enrolled under the government‑funded scholarship programme.
The debt had stood at roughly US$3.6 million in July 2025, after Ghana had made two US$1 million payments in August 2025. The latest outlay is expected to cut the arrears substantially and restore confidence in the scholarship arrangement as the university prepares to start its fall semester.
While the payment marks a major step toward clearing the outstanding balance, questions remain about the long‑term status of the partnership and how it will affect students already enrolled. The students are to receive further updates on their scholarships and the continuation of the programme.
