The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has reiterated that any airline seeking to operate domestically must satisfy a comprehensive set of safety and security requirements before receiving certification. Director General Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur told Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition that the Authority remains open to new entrants but will not compromise on safety to spur competition.
Arthur explained that the GCAA levels the playing field for all applicants, regardless of origin, and provides support once they complete the required checklist. However, he emphasised that the greater burden lies on the applicants to meet every regulatory criterion.
He warned that aviation is governed by strict rules designed to protect passengers and aircraft, and that breaching these rules endangers lives. The certification process is guided by both local regulations and international standards, and failure to comply could have serious consequences.
The Authority believes that adding more airlines could increase capacity, improve service and put downward pressure on domestic airfares. Arthur said a healthy competitive market would encourage lower fares, making domestic travel more affordable for Ghanaians.
Moving forward, the GCAA will continue to monitor applications closely, ensuring that any new airline entering the market meets the highest safety and security standards before commencing operations.
