Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia met with the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on Thursday at the GMA House in Korle‑Bu Teaching Hospital. The meeting, led by GMA President Professor (Dr.) Ernest Yorke, was part of Bawumia’s ongoing stakeholder consultations on health‑sector challenges.
Discussions centred on the retention of health workers, the brain‑drain of medical professionals, remuneration, and the distribution of doctors to rural areas. The group also examined emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived‑area allowances, and the role of private‑sector participation in healthcare delivery.
A key item on the agenda was a proposal from the Medical and Dental Council to introduce an additional licensing examination for locally trained doctors. Bawumia said the engagement underscored the need for a shift in national healthcare policies and that innovative proposals from the GMA could drive sectoral change and improve conditions for medical professionals.
The meeting is part of a broader series of consultations by Bawumia with other stakeholder groups on policy and sectoral issues across Ghana.
