The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs announced on Monday that Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services will operate in a contra‑flow arrangement on three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) starting Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
During peak hours, from 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 8 pm, selected road sections on the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra routes will be temporarily reconfigured to allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the normal flow of traffic. The lanes will be strictly reserved for BRT buses; private cars, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will be barred.
The intervention is a joint effort with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR). The MTTD will provide traffic control and enforcement support at key intersections to ensure compliance.
In its statement, the Ministry said the move aims to improve the punctuality of Ayalolo services, cut journey times and reduce congestion on the main approaches to the CBD. It also hopes to encourage commuters to use mass public transport, thereby easing pressure from the large volume of private vehicles.
The Ministry urged motorists, commercial operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected corridors to cooperate with traffic officers and support the new arrangement.
Commuters can expect a smoother ride on the Amasaman, Adenta and Kasoa routes as the government rolls out the contra‑flow lanes in an effort to make Accra’s transport network more reliable.
