On Friday, October 2, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told the media that the Controller and Accountant‑General’s Department is validating data on up to 51,000 teachers as the government works to pay outstanding promotion arrears.
The validation exercise will inform a supplementary payment schedule for one category of teachers, while others will have their payments reflected in their October salaries.
Mr Iddrisu said the payment of promotion arrears was one of three core issues raised by striking teacher unions during the government’s meeting with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre‑Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
He reiterated the government’s commitment to place all promoted teachers on their new grades by the end of October, stating, "We will honour our commitment of the new grades for all promoted teachers on or before 30th October."
The Controller and Accountant‑General’s Department will continue the validation process from Monday, October 5, with a supplementary payment schedule to be provided for the affected category, while the other category will receive arrears as part of their October salaries.
The minister said the government is working to address the outstanding issues and restore normal academic activities disrupted by the nationwide strike.
What to watch: The validation process will begin on Monday, and the supplementary payment schedule is expected to be released shortly thereafter.
