Tamale Child Deaths: Vehicle Owner Arrested as IGP Deploys Homicide Team

The discovery of three children’s bodies inside the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson in Tamale has prompted the arrest of the vehicle’s owner, who is now being transported to Accra to assist police investigations.

The bodies were uncovered at about 5 am on Monday, 5 October 2026, near Koblimahagu Zoo in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region. The children, identified as Dauda Abdul Aziz (3), Saani Alsharaf (5) and Dauda Fadilan (7), had reportedly left home for Islamic classes at around 8 am on Sunday, 4 October, but failed to return.

Police say the vehicle, registered AS 1770‑14, was found stuck in mud on a road leading to the area. Preliminary inspection revealed the driver’s door and the rear passenger door behind the driver’s seat were open, while the other doors, including the boot, were locked. The vehicle is believed to belong to a member of the Ghana Immigration Service.

Following the arrest, the Inspector‑General of Police deployed a special investigative team to Tamale, comprising homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers, to work with the Northern Regional Police Command and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The vehicle has been secured for further forensic examination.

Police have not yet disclosed the cause of death and have declined a request by the families to release the bodies for burial in accordance with Islamic customs, citing the need for an autopsy to support the investigation. Authorities have assured parents that the state will cover any financial costs associated with the autopsy.

Further details are expected as the investigation proceeds.
