Veteran actor Oscar Provencal said on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning that poor institutional leadership is a major obstacle to the growth of Ghana’s creative industry. Speaking with host George Quaye on Wednesday, Provencal warned that the challenges faced by the film sector mirror broader national problems.
“Institutional leadership has been a problem in the creative industry. And we are just a microscopic microcosm of the picture,” he told the audience, noting that national policies inevitably trickle down to the creative space.
Provencal urged the industry to attract leaders who are not encumbered by politics, who possess the necessary qualifications and vision, and who can translate words into action. He also criticised the lack of engagement from industry members, citing poor attendance at meetings that discuss the sector’s future.
Addressing the Ghanaian movie industry specifically, the actor highlighted ongoing efforts to reform leadership structures and ensure equality in membership. He believes that such reforms are essential if the industry is to reclaim its prominence and create more opportunities for practitioners.
As the creative sector looks to expand, Provencal’s call for stronger, more competent leadership remains a key point of discussion among stakeholders and policymakers alike.
