Obuasi East MP Urges More Specialists for Ghana’s Cardiac Centres

During an oversight visit to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Obuasi East MP and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Health, Patrick Boakye‑Yiadom, urged the government to train more specialised doctors and nurses for the hospital’s Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and Cardiac Interventional Centre.

Boakye‑Yiadom highlighted that the facility currently relies on a single cardiac team that works around the clock without breaks or leave. He warned that the absence of even one team member could jeopardise service delivery and stressed the urgency of expanding the workforce.

Speaking in front of the committee, the MP praised the existing medical staff for their dedication but said the sustainability of cardiac services depends on having a robust, well‑staffed team. “What happens if one of them falls sick? So the government should place emphasis on training more highly skilled doctors and nurses to continue to maintain the place,” he said.

The call comes as Ghana is expanding its cardiac care infrastructure. The Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and Cardiac Interventional Centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi are still under construction. Boakye‑Yiadom urged that a qualified team be ready before the new facility is commissioned, rather than waiting until construction is complete.

He also commended the Korle Bu doctors and health professionals for providing highly specialised care to patients who might otherwise struggle to access such services. The MP’s remarks underscore the need to match infrastructure investments with the training and deployment of skilled personnel to ensure effective and sustainable cardiac care across the country.

As the government reviews its health workforce strategy, stakeholders will likely monitor how the call for additional specialists is addressed, especially given the growing demand for cardiac services in Ghana.
