The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) confirmed that motorists who have not subscribed to the mandatory towing service will receive any surplus from the auction of their vehicles, after the cost of towing is deducted, provided the owners can be traced.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Director General Abraham Amaliba explained that the authorities will first deduct towing costs from the proceeds of the sale and return any remaining amount to the owner if they can be located. “If the amount is more than what you owe us, we’ll give the rest to you. That is, if we can find you. If not, we’ll put it in a government account,” he said.

The policy targets vehicles whose owners have not subscribed to the towing service and cannot be reached. NRSA will use registration records to trace owners and give them 21 days to come forward before proceeding with an auction. The aim is to clear the growing number of accident‑damaged vehicles left unclaimed at police stations.

Amaliba also outlined plans to allow road safety officials and police to identify and remove vehicles left on major roads, even when owners are unable to act. “If the vehicle is not towed, we are going to have a back room which will give us access to all the major roads in Ghana,” he said, adding that the system would help remove stalled cars that pose a risk to other road users.

Motorists who are unable to retrieve their vehicles before auction will be refunded any surplus after towing costs are covered, ensuring that the authorities recover expenses while still compensating owners who can be located.
