At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) approved a constitutional amendment that designates the party’s flagbearer as its leader. The motion, one of 14 changes presented by the Constitution Amendment Committee, passed with unanimous support from the 7,163 delegates representing all 16 regions.
The amendment reverses a clause adopted at the party’s January 31, 2026 conference that had made the National Chairman the party’s leader at all material times. Under the new text, the flagbearer – currently Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – will assume the leadership role ahead of the 2028 general election.
Other approved changes alter the election of Vice Chairpersons, allowing candidates to contest specific positions rather than all competing for the top three slots. Delegates also voted to appoint three additional Vice Chairpersons who will not be elected, and to create Deputy Communications Officer positions while elevating the IT Officer to an executive role.
Frank Davies, chair of the NPP Constitution Amendment Committee, said the revisions address gaps in the party’s organisational structure. “These limited constitutional amendments were necessitated by some acts of omission and commission, which heralded the last amendment we had in 2025, so this is to cure the grey areas that we overlooked,” he said.
Despite Acting National Chairman Joseph Danquah Smith’s earlier proposal to defer the amendments due to time constraints, the conference proceeded with the review. The Electoral Commission supervised the elections and verified delegate votes for nine national executive positions.
With the amendment in place, the NPP is positioning itself for the 2028 election, ensuring that the flagbearer’s leadership is formally recognised in the party constitution.
