The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold its national executive elections today, Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The vote will determine the party’s leadership for the next phase of its political organisation ahead of the 2028 general election.

Around 7,100 delegates from across the country are expected to participate. The Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the elections, while the NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) will oversee the internal arrangements. The EC has confirmed that all preparations are complete, with ballot papers ready and electoral materials deployed to the Ashanti Region.

The election follows the completion of the NPP’s nationwide reorganisation, which included polling station, electoral area, constituency and regional‑level elections. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the party’s presidential primary in January 2026, is the NPP’s flag‑bearer for the 2028 presidential election, and the new national executives will work closely with the party’s structures as it prepares for the next general election.

Initially, 47 aspirants filed nominations and proceeded to vetting. National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha later withdrew from the National Organiser contest, reducing the number of candidates on the ballot to 46. The National Communications Director position is uncontested, with Dennis Miracles Aboagye as the sole candidate after Evans Kodom withdrew. Perpetual Ekua Lomokie Akwada did not complete her nomination for National Women’s Organiser.

Four candidates are contesting the National Chairperson position: John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko and Boakye Agyarko. Thirteen candidates are contesting the Vice‑Chairperson positions, with the first three successful candidates designated as First, Second and Third Vice‑Chairpersons. Four candidates are contesting the General Secretary position, including incumbent Dr Charles Dwamena. Seven candidates remain in the National Organiser race, while six candidates are contesting the National Treasurer position and five candidates are contesting the National Youth Organiser position.

To streamline the process, the NPP has established 31 voting centres within the stadium. Twenty‑one centres will handle the elections for National Chairperson, Vice‑Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser and National Treasurer, while the remaining ten will handle the party’s wing elections. No more than 400 delegates will be assigned to each centre, which will be manned by EC officials and accredited candidate agents.

Mr Evans Nimako, NPP Director of Elections, said the party had already conducted a simulation exercise at the stadium involving the conference committee, the Police Service, the EC and other stakeholders to test the arrangements. The conference will begin with party business before the electoral process, with delegates expected to consider proposed amendments to portions of the NPP’s constitution, including a review of the provision concerning who should be regarded as the leader of the party, changes to the election of Vice‑Chairpersons and the appointment of additional Vice‑Chairpersons who would not be elected.

Voting is expected to begin around midday, though the EC has indicated that voting could continue beyond that time if necessary. Delegates are cautioned against photographing their marked ballot papers or directing others on how to vote, as such conduct is an electoral offence. Identification will be verified using a party membership card, voter identification card or Ghana Card before voting is permitted.

Security arrangements have been made for the conference, with the EC and police on standby to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
