On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) opened a nationwide inter‑school quiz competition at Kintampo Senior High School in the Bono East Region. The initiative, part of a broader sensitisation exercise, seeks to deepen Senior High School students’ understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, NHIA Chief Executive, explained that the programme would equip young people with practical knowledge of the NHIS, enabling them to become health‑literate advocates in their homes and communities. He highlighted that the competition would expose students to key aspects of the Scheme, including its policies, operations, benefits, digital services and beneficiary responsibilities.
The Corporate Affairs Directorate, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service under the School Health Education Programme, will run the event. Three schools from each of Ghana’s 16 regions will form 48 three‑member teams to compete in regional, zonal and ultimately a national grand finale on November 26, 2026.
Mr Oswald Essuah‑Mensah, Director of Corporate Affairs, said the sensitisation exercise will prepare schools through interactive Q&A sessions and mock quiz rounds. Topics will cover NHIS operations, digital registration via the MyNHIS App, mobile renewal using *929#, the NHIS Benefit Package, and beneficiary exemption categories.
Following the launch, Dr Ruth Kukua Ntumy Coleman, Client Services Manager, led the first phase of the exercise, visiting five schools in the Bono and Bono East regions. The programme will continue to the Ahafo Region on September 30 and the Ashanti Region on October 2, allowing students to interact directly with NHIA officials and clarify Scheme questions.
As the competition progresses, the NHIA hopes students will use their newfound knowledge to promote greater understanding of the NHIS among families and communities across Ghana.
