On Wednesday, October 14, Dr Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, lauded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for stabilising Ghana’s economy after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration’s recovery efforts.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the MP said both administrations deserved recognition for their respective contributions to economic recovery, while urging the government to ensure that improved macro‑economic indicators translate into tangible benefits for Ghanaians.
Amoah noted that the NPP government introduced measures to restore the economy following the global economic crisis and credited the NDC administration with building on those efforts to improve key indicators such as inflation, Treasury bill rates and the country’s debt‑to‑GDP ratio.
He added that the next priority should be to create room for businesses to expand, employ more people and ease the financial pressure on households, stressing the need for a practical impact that has not yet been felt.
The MP also urged the government to carefully assess the timing of tax measures, arguing that policies should take account of prevailing economic conditions and the challenges facing businesses and households. He warned that while tax policies could be adjusted to meet revenue needs, authorities must consider whether their implementation would worsen hardship or limit businesses’ ability to grow.
His comments come amid discussions over the implementation of a 20% tax on qualifying cross‑border digital services, with commercial banks expected to begin collecting applicable taxes on such transactions from October 15, 2026.
